Caring for an aging parent or loved one is an act of love, but it can also leave family caregivers with very little time for themselves. Between managing daily responsibilities, keeping up with work, and attending to a loved one’s needs, even a short break can become difficult to arrange. That’s why Gently Aging Home Care is pleased to introduce the PAUSE™ Program, a flexible respite care option designed to give family caregivers time away while ensuring their loved ones remain safe, comfortable, and supported at home.
Available to families in Guilford, Connecticut, and surrounding shoreline communities, the PAUSE™ Program offers a practical alternative to traditional home care schedules, without requiring a recurring weekly commitment.
Everyone Deserves a PAUSE
Family caregiving doesn’t always leave room for personal needs. A trip to the grocery store, a medical appointment, lunch with a friend, or a few hours of uninterrupted rest can feel impossible when someone depends on you for daily assistance.
Over time, these limitations can affect a caregiver’s physical health, emotional well-being, and relationships. Some family caregivers begin missing important activities, putting off their own appointments, or struggling to balance employment with responsibilities at home.
The PAUSE™ Program was created with these challenges in mind. Rather than asking families to commit to ongoing weekly services, it provides access to dependable respite care when a break is needed.
Taking time for yourself doesn’t mean you’re stepping away from your commitment to your loved one. It means recognizing that your well-being matters, too.
Flexible Respite Care That Works Around Your Life
One of the most valuable features of the PAUSE™ Program is its flexibility. Families can arrange shorter visits without committing to an ongoing care schedule.
The program includes:
- 10- or 20-hour care packages: Hours can be used over a 90-day period, allowing families to plan breaks according to their needs.
- No recurring weekly schedule: Arrange care without committing to regular weekly visits or a long-term agreement.
- Two-hour minimum visits: Schedule a brief break for errands, appointments, or personal activities without paying for unnecessary additional hours.
- 48-hour advance notice: Plan care with as little as 48 hours’ notice, providing greater flexibility when scheduling time away.
- Individualized care planning: An initial in-home assessment allows the team to meet the client and family and develop a care plan based on individual needs.
- Home safety assessment: Identify potential hazards in your loved one’s home and receive practical recommendations to help create a safer living environment.
- Family caregiver education and training: Gain helpful information, practical guidance, and greater confidence in caring for your loved one.
For example, an adult daughter who usually spends her Saturdays caring for her mother might schedule a few hours of assistance so she can attend a family event. Another caregiver might use the program to keep personal appointments or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon.
The goal is to make taking a break easier, without adding another complicated obligation to the family’s schedule.
More Than Respite: The CARE Philosophy
The PAUSE™ Program goes beyond providing temporary caregiver relief. It is built around Gently Aging Home Care’s CARE Philosophy, which recognizes that families benefit from practical guidance and ongoing support as well as time away.
The four principles include:
C — Caregiver Relief: Giving family caregivers much-needed time away from their daily responsibilities so they can rest, recharge, or attend to personal needs.
A — A Safer Home: Identifying potential household hazards through a home safety assessment and offering practical recommendations to improve safety.
R — Resources and Education: Providing family caregivers with education, training, and connections to helpful resources that can build confidence in their caregiving role.
E — Evolving Support: Remaining a trusted resource as a loved one’s needs change and families consider additional care options.
This approach acknowledges that caregiving needs rarely remain the same. What begins as occasional assistance may eventually require a different level of support. Having a familiar care provider to turn to can make those transitions easier to navigate.
Helping Family Caregivers Feel More Confident
Many family caregivers assume they must handle every responsibility themselves. Others hesitate to arrange respite care because they worry that someone unfamiliar with their loved one’s routines won’t understand what is needed.
The PAUSE™ Program addresses these concerns through an initial in-home assessment and individualized care planning.
The assessment gives the family an opportunity to discuss daily routines, personal preferences, and care needs before services begin. A home safety assessment also helps identify potential hazards that could affect an older adult’s well-being.
Family caregiver education and training provide another important benefit. Whether a family is new to caregiving or has been managing responsibilities for years, additional information and resources can help them feel better prepared.
These features make the program more than a temporary break. They create an opportunity for families to receive support that extends beyond the scheduled care visit.
It’s Okay to PAUSE — You Don’t Have to Stop Caring
Family caregivers often wait until they feel completely overwhelmed before asking for help. Yet taking regular breaks can make the caregiving experience more manageable and help preserve the meaningful relationship between an older adult and the person who cares for them.
Sometimes, two hours is enough to attend an appointment, reconnect with friends, or enjoy time without caregiving responsibilities. Other times, a longer break may be necessary.
Whatever the reason, needing time away is normal.
At Gently Aging Home Care, we believe family caregivers deserve the same consideration, compassion, and support they provide to their loved ones every day.
